Christchurch: Quake Photos

April 10th, 2011 by Joel Leave a reply »

It was a month after the most recent quake when I arrived in Christchurch. Most of the city center is still closed off, allowing only brief, escorted visits for residents to retrieve essential belongings. These photos are only from outside that safety cordon.

While traveling, I’ve often whined about things that didn’t go the way I’d planned. There’s a tendency to dramatize the impact of unfortunate things that happen in our lives to make for a compelling story.

This is a stark reminder that there’s a huge difference between inconvenience and tragedy.

  1. I feel so sorry for all the people who lost their homes in Christchurch.

I heard that they had another pretty serious after shock today where many people lost the electricity – again..

It was definitely difficult to look at, especially when you consider I could only see the outskirts and not the more significant devastation of the city center.

Yeah, I wish I could have gotten some better photos, but it was elevated and cordoned off. Many tombstones had fallen and broken. Sad stuff.

Wow. Amazing pictures. I like the house with the painted ‘We will try to save this house’. The photo of the cemetery is particularly moving. I haven’t seen many pictures of the Christchurch earthquake- I was traveling at the time and just after I got home, the Japan earthquake and tsunami happened, so that became the new topic and NZ was pushed to the side a little. :( Thanks the sharing the pics!
